I wrote a quick thought on the Micro Pro, which I like fine, even it's a bit pricey, even after the 75$ rebate.
I also got the Micro today, to use as the fill light with the MicroPro. I ordered one of each because the
MicroPro is still a bit big and heavy to use on camera (5DMKII). The MicroPro is also a bit intimidating I think,
both in size, and output for a subject. I think this is the ideal combination to have both. The Micro is just
215$ after the 50$ rebate, which seems like a doable amount.
After comparing the output of the Micro, and MicroPro, I am still more impressed from the Micro than I thought
I would. The output is not bad at all, especially for being 1/2 the size of the MicroPro.
Much has been written about how flimsy the Micro is, but I don't think it's flimsy. The plastic
is thick, and textured. They may have beefed up the plastic after so many complaints, I don't know.
I think it would survive a few drops. The integrated hot shoe mount also got a bad rap for being plastic,
but it's pretty decent plastic, and has some flex to it, so if it was on your camera, and it was bumped,
I think it would give a bit, and not snap. I also like having it in place as an integrated unit, because
with the MicroPro, the hot shoe adapter is metal, but it's a screw on unit, so if you forget the hot shoe
adapter, you can't mount it.
The output from the MicroPro is definitely broader, and a bit softer than the Micro. The Micro has
an almost circular throw of light, which might be good for a face.
The Micro is 215$ after rebate, and the MicroPro is 376$ after rebate. If you had the $,
and could only get one, I'd say the MicroPro. The Micro is nice because it costs less,
and is 1/2 the size, and 1/3 the weight. But if you can get both, the work well together.
